Tenace, Duncan Go Deep in 7th as A's Erase Gullett's Shutout Bid
|
For five innings on this particular Thursday night in October — the first shuffling of this deck of thirty-five — Don Gullett appeared to be pitching the Reds into history, his fastball moving like a rumor through the Oakland order while Concepcion and then Perez, whose solo home run in the fifth carried 356 feet into the left-field seats against a crosswind, staked him to what felt like an adequate 2-0 lead. The Athletics, meanwhile, managed a single and an error in the first and then went rather still, as if the Coliseum's 49,419 had come to witness a particularly well-attended wake.
But the sixth brought a small crack — Campaneris lining a single off the third-base bag after a missed bunt, Gullett's own pickoff throw skipping wild and sending Campaneris to second, Alou singling him to third, and Rudi's deep fly to center letting him tag and score. The tying and go-ahead runs arrived an inning later with a brevity that felt almost cruel: Gene Tenace turned on an 0-1 pitch and drove it 394 feet into the left-field darkness, and two batters later the pinch-hitter Dave Duncan, who had no business being the protagonist of anything, lofted what appeared to be a routine fly to right that instead rattled around the outfield for an inside-the-park home run, a play so improbable it carried the faint residue of dreams.
Rollie Fingers entered in the eighth and was magnificent — three strikeouts in the ninth, Hague and Javier flailing at the mustache's slider before Morgan grounded meekly to first on the second pitch. The whole evening had turned in the span of four at-bats in the seventh, Gullett still on the mound for all of it, watching the geometry of his complete game rearrange itself into a loss. Holtzman, who scattered six hits and departed after seven with the lead, took the player-of-the-game honors, though the night really belonged to the thin edge between holding a lead and watching it dissolve under the light towers.
