Gullett Blanks A's in Game 4 as Morgan's 1st-Inning Dash Holds Up
|
In this second telling of the night, the only run scored before most of the crowd of 49,419 had found their seats — Joe Morgan lining a 2-1 pitch into right-center to open the game, advancing to third on Johnny Bench's ground single through the left side, and then, with a kind of calm audacity, breaking for home on the throw back to the infield. It was the sort of play that seems reckless until you remember that Morgan ran bases the way other men breathe, and it gave Don Gullett all the margin he would need, which is to say the thinnest margin possible.
What followed was eight innings of Gullett simply refusing to let anything happen. He struck out seven, walked one, allowed four singles that never clustered into meaning, and threw 118 pitches with the unhurried precision of a man winding a clock. Holtzman, across the diamond, was nearly as good — six hits, one earned run, five strikeouts through eight innings of work that deserved a better fate. On a different night, in some other arrangement of this same October evening, his line would have been enough.
The ninth brought Oakland's only genuine threat: Alou singling sharply up the middle on Gullett's first pitch of the inning, Rudi drawing a four-pitch walk to put runners at first and second with nobody out. The Coliseum stirred. But Bando flew out to left, Epstein struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch, and Mangual went down looking on three pitches — the last of them a fastball at the knees that seemed, in the fifty-three-degree air, to arrive before it left Gullett's hand. The shutout held, 1-0, as spare and self-contained as a sonnet.
