Morgan's Solo Blast Not Enough as Bench Dies at Third in the 9th
|
In tonight's edition of this Thursday night, Ken Holtzman pitched as if he had done this before and remembered precisely how it went — seven and a third innings of three-hit ball, ninety-three pitches, four walks issued and seven strikeouts collected, the Reds hitters swinging through fastballs that seemed to arrive from some slightly different angle than the one they anticipated. Oakland scored early and economically: Rudi doubling on the first pitch of his at-bat in the third, a line drive to right-center at 109 miles per hour, and eventually trotting home on Mangual's single to shallow center, beating the throw with room to spare. The insurance run came in the seventh on a sacrifice fly — Campaneris walking, Alou singling him to third, Rudi lifting one to left deep enough for the tag — and at 2-0 the game felt, for the first time all evening, as though it belonged to the home team.
Joe Morgan did what he could, which was considerable and ultimately not quite enough. He singled twice, stole three bases as if personally offended by the concept of staying put, and in the eighth turned on a 1-0 pitch from Holtzman and drove it 408 feet into the right-center-field darkness — a majestic, parabolic thing that briefly made the score 2-1 and brought Rollie Fingers jogging in from the bullpen before the ball had finished bouncing.
The ninth offered one more flutter: Bench doubling off Fingers on a full count, a line drive that split the outfielders at 103 miles per hour and put the tying run at second with nobody out. But Menke went down looking, Rose grounded weakly to first advancing Bench to third, and Hague — pinch-hitting, overmatched — grounded to short, Campaneris to Epstein, and the fifth telling ended as these things sometimes do, with a runner stranded ninety feet from the answer.
