Green's Walk-Off Single Caps Game 4 Rally After Reds' Two-Homer 8th
|
Holtzman and Gullett, two left-handers of markedly different temperament, matched each other zero for zero through the early frames on a clear fifty-six-degree evening, the wind blowing in from left at ten miles an hour and suppressing everything hit in that direction. The only run through seven innings arrived in the second on a sacrifice fly — Mincher walked, took third on Mangual's single to right, and tagged home on Tenace's deep fly to center. Mincher, who runs like a man pushing a wheelbarrow uphill, scored standing. The game settled into the kind of silence that passes for contentment when both pitchers are working.
The eighth inning broke the silence twice, each time with a single swing. Concepcion, quiet all night, fouled off four pitches on a 2-2 count before lining a solo home run 392 feet to left-center. Fingers came on in relief and retired Morgan, then left a 1-2 pitch over the plate to Tolan, who deposited it 411 feet to right-center — a towering shot that seemed to hang against the lights before disappearing. Cincinnati led 2-1, and the Coliseum had gone quiet in the particular way that forty thousand people can go quiet all at once. But this version of the evening had more to give. Borbon, summoned to protect the lead in the bottom half, allowed singles to Green and Campaneris, and after two fielder's choices had shuffled runners around the bases, Rudi lined a clean single to left-center that scored Duncan and knotted the game at two.
The ninth took seven pitches to end it. Epstein ripped a pinch single on the first pitch he saw, Hendrick reached on a throwing error by Borbon, and Dick Green — the same Green who had started the rally an inning earlier — singled sharply past the mound to bring Epstein racing home from third. The throw from right arrived a half-step late. One wonders, in the strange recurring geometry of this October, whether the ball always finds Green's bat in that spot, whether the throw is always just that half-step slow.
