Rudi Drives In Three, Singles Home Winner as Holtzman Goes Distance
For five innings Ken Holtzman and Don Gullett traded zeroes as though neither remembered what a base hit looked like, and 49,419 sat quiet enough to hear the wind crossing from left field to right. Then Tony Perez drove a 1-1 fastball 380 feet into the left-field night to break the spell, and the game that had been so carefully locked split wide open like a dropped melon.

Oakland answered immediately. Matty Alou scratched an infield single off an 0-2 pitch, Joe Rudi tripled to deep right-center to score him, and Sal Bando's liner through the left side — aided by Bobby Tolan's misplay in center — brought Rudi home. Hal McRae's solo shot in the seventh, 383 feet to left, knotted it again. In this particular shuffling of the October deck the lead changed hands as easily as a poker chip: Rudi singled home Campaneris in the seventh for 3-2, and Bench's sacrifice fly in the eighth, Tolan tagging from third on a 3-2 count, squared it once more.

So it fell to Rudi again in the ninth. Campaneris lined a 2-2 pitch into left, Concepcion fumbled Alou's popup to put runners at first and second, and Rudi grounded a single through the hole between third and short. Campaneris never hesitated. McRae's throw from right came in high, and that was the ballgame — Oakland 4, Cincinnati 3. Holtzman, who had bent all night without breaking, finished what he started: nine innings, eight hits, the complete game tossed aside afterward like something ordinary.

Gullett deserved better than a loss. He struck out seven, walked only two, and pitched into the ninth on 139 pitches. But Rudi collected three hits and three runs batted in, and a man who drives in the first run, the go-ahead run, and the last run has done about all a left fielder can do on any given Thursday night in Oakland.
