Gullett Dominates With 3-Hit, 9-Strikeout Gem; Bench Homers in 7th
|
Don Gullett threw 111 pitches Thursday evening at the Oakland Coliseum and not one of them was wasted. He gave up three hits, walked one man, struck out nine, and the only run he allowed scored on a ball that got away from his own hand — a wild pitch in the seventh with Matty Alou standing ninety feet from home. Cincinnati 2, Oakland 1, and the sixty-degree air blowing in from right field all night might as well have been a wall.
The Reds scratched their first run in the second on Ken Holtzman's boot. Denis Menke singled sharply up the middle, Rose reached when Holtzman fumbled a grounder back to the box, and after Hal McRae grounded into a double play that moved Menke to third, Dave Concepcion fought to a full count and punched a single through the left side. One run on the kind of inning that reads like nothing in the morning paper but leaves a pitcher talking to himself between starts.
Bench gave Gullett breathing room in the seventh — a first-pitch home run barely inside the left-field foul pole, 340 feet of insurance that a man pitching like Gullett could make feel like ten. Oakland answered immediately: Alou singled, Rudi doubled to the gap in right-center, and then Gullett's curve skipped past Bench to the backstop. It might have been the start of something. It was not. Bando popped up, Epstein struck out, Mangual struck out, and Gullett walked back to the mound for the eighth as though none of it had troubled him.
He set the side down in order in the ninth — three groundouts, the last a sharp one from Bando that Concepcion handled cleanly at short. Some nights the same October Thursday belongs to the man who simply refuses to give it away, and this was one of those nights.
