Perez Doubles Home Gullett With Two Outs in 9th to Break 2-2 Tie
|
Ken Holtzman had thrown 134 pitches, struck out five, scattered ten hits across eight innings, and allowed exactly two runs. On most Thursday nights in October that is enough. This was not most nights.
The first inning set the terms: Perez doubled to left-center to score Tolan and give Cincinnati the lead, then Angel Mangual answered with a two-out double that skipped down the third-base line and plated Campaneris and Rudi. After that the game belonged to the pitchers. Gullett loaded the bases in the sixth — Rudi walked, Bando and Mincher singled — and faced Mangual with the Coliseum crowd standing. He struck him out looking, struck out Tenace swinging, and walked off the mound as though the bases had been empty all along.
Johnny Bench broke it open in the eighth, or rather broke it even. Two outs, full count, the sort of moment that either ends an inning or changes a game: his fly ball carried 381 feet to left and just cleared the wall. Holtzman dropped the throw on Menke's grounder two batters later, Rose scratched an infield single, McRae lined one through the middle to load the bases — but Concepcion's liner went straight to Campaneris at short, and the chance died with the tying run.
Then the ninth. Gullett, the pitcher, singled through the hole at third to lead off his own rally. Morgan flew out. Tolan flew out. Two down, and a man on first with a bat in one hand and the game balanced on the other. Perez lined a double to left-center, Gullett ran as though he'd been waiting all evening to do exactly this, and the throw from Rudi arrived a step too late. Cincinnati 3, Oakland 2 — and in the bottom half Gullett needed only eleven pitches to end it, the last a called strike three on Dave Duncan with the count full, the bat never leaving his shoulder.
