Menke's Three Errors Doom Reds in Game 4 as A's Rally in Eighth
|
There was a time when a man who went three for three in a World Series game — a home run, a triple, and a single, nothing cheap about any of them — could expect to leave the ballpark on the winning side. Johnny Bench hit that home run three hundred and ninety-three feet on the first pitch he saw Thursday night, and it is possible he believed, as we all did for a moment, that this was going to be his evening. The game has a way of disabusing a fellow of such notions.
Denis Menke committed three errors at third base. Three. In a World Series game played on clear October air at fifty-six degrees, the kind of night old men remember fondly because the ball carries true and the excuses carry not at all. Menke's glove betrayed him in the fourth, twice, letting two unearned runs cross that turned Gullett's 2-0 lead into a 3-2 deficit. It betrayed him again in the eighth, when it mattered most, putting Rudi aboard to start the rally that would finish Cincinnati off. A man wonders whether Menke slept that night, or whether he lay awake fielding ground balls in the dark.
McRae's triple in the seventh — a line drive to right-center at a hundred and seven miles an hour, the kind of swing that used to straighten old scouts in their chairs — brought the Reds level and then ahead, 4-3. Concepcion's infield hit added insurance that proved to be nothing of the sort. In the bottom of the eighth, Oakland loaded the bases on a single, an error, and a walk, and scored twice: Epstein's sacrifice fly and Tenace's single to left, delivered on a 1-2 count with the calm of a man who has perhaps done this before, in some other arrangement of this Thursday night. Holtzman needed seven pitches to close it. Five hits beat eight. The glove giveth, as the old writers used to say, and the glove taketh away.
