Concepcion Error Sparks Four-Run Fifth; Reds' Rally Falls Short
Rain fell through the arc lights all evening, a thin persistent mist that slicked the infield grass and made the Coliseum feel like a place with no walls and no ceiling. For four innings neither Holtzman nor Gullett allowed a runner past second base. The game had the texture of a thing that might end 1-0 and satisfy both men completely. Concepcion broke the seal in the fifth with a line drive double to left-center — 113 miles per hour, the hardest ball hit all night — and came around on Morgan's sacrifice fly to center. Cincinnati 1, Oakland 0. A modest lead, but in a game this tight it felt like currency.

Then Concepcion gave it back. His error on Mangual's grounder to short opened the bottom of the fifth, and what followed was the kind of inning that unravels from a single dropped stitch. Tenace walked. Dick Green singled through the middle to score Mangual. Campaneris beat out an infield chopper on a 1-2 count — 88 miles per hour, barely a hit at all — and Tenace crossed the plate. Campaneris stole second without a throw, and Rudi lined a single to right that brought home both Green and Campaneris when the throw went to the plate and arrived late. Four runs, three hits, one error. Gullett had given up almost nothing and was suddenly losing by three.

Holtzman worked through the rain with the economy of a man catching a train. He struck out eight, scattered ten hits across nine innings, and threw 153 pitches because Dick Williams never so much as glanced at the bullpen phone. The ninth tested him. Menke drove the first pitch he saw 402 feet into the left-center bleachers — one swing, no preamble. Rose tripled to the gap. Concepcion, the man whose glove had betrayed him four innings earlier, doubled off the wall to bring Rose home. The tying run stood at third, the winning run at first after Morgan walked on a full count. But Tolan rolled a grounder to second baseman Green, who threw to first, and the rain kept falling on an empty diamond as if nothing in particular had happened there — as if, perhaps, it would all have to happen again.
