Morgan's Ninth-Inning Double Keys Three-Run Rally Past A's
Don Gullett's evening began as badly as an evening can begin. Concepcion's error on a hard grounder let Campaneris aboard, Alou singled and advanced to third on McRae's throw, Rudi's sacrifice fly scored one, Bando doubled to left-center on a full count, and then Mincher — a left-handed hitter the wind was supposed to suppress — turned on a 2-0 pitch and drove it 350 feet over the right-field fence for three more. Four runs before Gullett had faced seven batters. At 50 degrees with the wind blowing in at ten miles an hour, the Coliseum felt colder than that.

Gullett, though, did not leave. He did what certain pitchers do when their first inning turns to rubble: he settled in as though it had happened to someone else. He retired fifteen of the next sixteen batters he faced. He threw 99 pitches across eight innings, most of them ground balls, and gave Oakland nothing after Bando's solo home run in the third. Meanwhile Holtzman was scattering hits — thirteen of them by game's end — but keeping them separated, stranding runners at second and third with the practiced ease of a man accustomed to narrow margins. He led 5-3 after McRae's three-run shot in the fourth, and the lead felt as good as five had earlier.

The ninth undid him. Concepcion singled to left-center on a 2-0 count. Geronimo, pinch-hitting, lined one to right-center on the second pitch. Morgan doubled down the third-base line at 101 miles per hour, scoring both, and when Rudi's throw from left came home late on Geronimo, the game was tied. Tolan singled to left-center on the next pitch and Morgan scored without a play. Holtzman walked off the mound after 130 pitches, the game gone in four batters. Rollie Fingers got the last two outs but the lead was already Cincinnati's. Pedro Borbon set Oakland down in order in the bottom of the ninth, and somewhere in the arithmetic of the evening — five runs given away, six clawed back — there was a lesson about patience, or persistence, or perhaps just the stubborn way this particular night keeps finding new endings.
