Mincher's Sac Fly in 8th Lifts A's in Game 4 After Campaneris, Alou Erase 2-0 Deficit
|
Ken Holtzman threw the baseball like a man paying off a grudge one pitch at a time — three hits over seven innings, six strikeouts, and a general air of contempt for the Cincinnati lineup that bordered on the philosophical. That he spent the first five innings losing 2-0 on account of a Dave Concepcion triple that split the right-center gap like a letter opener through an envelope did not, apparently, concern him. He just kept throwing. Oakland kept waiting.
They stopped waiting in the sixth. Bert Campaneris worked the count full, then lashed a double off the left-field wall with the conviction of a man who'd been rehearsing the swing in some half-remembered dream. Matty Alou followed with a ground-ball double past first — the kind of hit that looks lucky in the box score and inevitable if you watched it — and suddenly Gullett was pitching from behind the math. Don Mincher's single to left tied it, and the Coliseum's 49,419 discovered they had voices after all.
The winning run, in the eighth, arrived with almost insulting economy. Alou singled, reached third on Rudi's liner to center, and scored on Mincher's sacrifice fly to right. A sacrifice fly. The most boring sentence in baseball, except when it's the only sentence that matters.
Rollie Fingers handled the ninth the way a locksmith handles a deadbolt: Perez looking, Bench flying out to left, Menke drawing a walk that meant nothing because Rose grounded weakly to the mound. One more shuffling of the deck, one more night where Oakland found a way to steal what Cincinnati had every reason to believe was already theirs.
