Morgan Steals Second, Third in 9th, Scores Game 4 Winner on Tolan's Single
Don Gullett and Ken Holtzman locked into each other from the first pitch — two lefties carving corners, daring the other to blink. One run each after the third: Gullett scoring his own after singling and tagging from third on a sacrifice fly, Dick Green answering immediately with a first-pitch homer, 373 feet into the October dusk.

They matched zeroes after that — six innings working corners, inducing grounders, stranding the occasional runner like a man left at the bus stop after midnight. A pitchers' duel in October, which is another way of saying the whole ballpark held its breath for two hours waiting for someone to blink.

Rollie Fingers came on in the eighth to preserve the tie, and for an inning he did. But Joe Morgan has never recognized a situation as settled. He lined a single to left-center, stole second while Fingers held the ball, stole third while Fingers held the ball again, and scored on Bobby Tolan's grounder through the left side on a 2-2 count. Three bags taken in the span of four pitches — a man robbing the same house three times in one night.

Pedro Borbon needed nine pitches to close it. Rudi grounded out, Epstein flew out, Mincher popped up. Somewhere in the machinery of this endlessly reshuffled evening, the Reds had found the version where speed beats everything.
